Externship Information for Alumni Hosts

*Host Registration for Externship Day 2017 is now closed.

Tuesday, February 7, 2017: Externship Day

Host a one-day externship at your workplace for one or more students to learn about your industry, increase their familiarity with the world of work, experience a "day-in-the-life-of-____," and develop connections with alumni like you. Externships go beyond traditional job shadowing in that hosts are encouraged to assist the extern's career exploration through intentional conversation and advising.

Sign up today to host an extern! We need professionals in all industries, especially marketing, medicine, technology, and consulting.

How it works:

  1. Review the host expectations below.
  2. Volunteer to host an externship by completing a brief registration form by December 1.
  3. Students select and apply to five different externship sites during the month of December.
  4. Based on their interests and background, we match students with one host site.
  5. Hosts receive notification of their match and student resumes in mid–January.
  6. Students head to their externships all over Chicagoland on Tuesday, February 7, 2017!

Please note: Faculty Development Day, February 7, was selected as the date for all externships so that students can job shadow on a day without scheduled classes. Should this date conflict with your schedule and you still wish to participate, please make a note on your registration form.

Alumni Host Expectations:

  1. Plan the day: Create an hour–by–hour schedule with varied activities and meetings. Consider hosting a rotational day for your externs, where they could visit other organizations within your same industry. Partner with a friend or two to make this happen!
  2. Coach your extern: Set aside time to get to know your extern, advise them on their career exploration, and provide honest feedback. Take advantage of this mentoring moment.
  3. Provide lunch: Take your extern out to lunch. This could be a great coaching opportunity!
  4. Expand your network: Give your extern opportunities to meet your colleagues or friends in the industry.

Please note: Externship Day is specifically designed for student career exploration. Should you be interested in recruiting students and alumni, please contact the Center for Vocation and Career at cvc@wheaton.edu

Tips for Planning the Day

  • Assume your extern has researched your company, but give a brief orientation on your company and industry.
  • Set up informational interviews with colleagues from a variety of business units/teams.
  • Include your extern in conference calls or meetings and answer the extern's questions afterwards.
  • Expose your extern to a variety of practical and hands–on responsibilities.
  • Although you don’t need to be with your extern at every moment, check in periodically and allow time to answer questions.
